Surgical hair restoration with Follicle Unit Transplantation
Androgenic alopecia (AGA) or male pattern baldness is evident when a man has lost the hair on the top of his head, and yet keeps the hair on the sides and back of the head. In the last 2 decades, it was discovered that DHT is responsible for miniaturization of hair follicles that is the hallmark of AGA.
The science is clear that balding men commonly have an abundance of DHT receptors on the follicles on top of the head, but few, if any DHT receptors on the follicles on the sides and back of the head. Those follicles can be transplanted into the balding areas to restore hair. The transplanted follicles grow normally because they are unaffected by DHT.
Hair transplantation is the gold standard treatment for AGA. The procedures to transplant hair are iterations of techniques that originated in the 1980’s. Today they are vastly improved and refined for superior results. Men report life- changing benefits from hair transplantation including compliments from people about looking younger, feeling better about themselves, and are again happy with their appearance.
Follicular Unit Transplants (FUT)
Strip hair transplants or FUT involve the removal of a long, thin strip of scalp taken from the back or sides of the head. The donor site is closed with staples or sutures.
The strip is carefully dissected to create follicular units. Follicular units contain oil glands, nerves, blood vessels, stem cells, small muscles and small hairs. The follicular units are then implanted intact into the areas where the hair is thinning or balding.
The FUT procedure allows Dr. Powell to transplant thousands of hairs in a single session, with little risk of damage to the follicular units. This maximizes the aesthetic impact and vastly improves cosmetic appearance. FUT restores natural looking hair growth even in non-scalp areas like the eyebrows, chest, beard, mustache and sideburns.
During your consultation with Dr. Powell he will review your medical and family history, examine your head, scalp and hair and discuss your surgical options based on your health, family history, age, lifestyle, hair density and follicle miniaturization, extent of hair loss, and potential for future balding. All hair transplantation surgery is individualized treatment.
The FUT process
The scalp is cleaned with a disinfecting solution. This method does not require the scalp to be shaved. Local anesthetic combined with epinephrine is used to numb the areas to be treated, and reduce bleeding. Depending on the time needed for transplantation the patient may receive IV sedation for comfort during the procedure.
A vertical incision is made to harvest the donor hair. The incision is generally only deep enough to harvest the entire follicular unit. The donor site is closed with sutures or staples.
The strip containing all the critical structures necessary for new hair growth is dissected under a special microscope into individual grafts of 1-4 hairs called follicular units.
The follicular units are implanted into tiny needle- made incisions with minimal trauma, that hold the grafts in place for healing, and ensures the grafts will receive sufficient oxygen to assure their survival.
You will have many questions, and Dr. Powell will spend time with you reviewing your options for surgical hair restoration, including the risks and benefits of each type of surgical hair restoration.
Hair transplant candidates are often concerned that the results may be conspicuous. When you choose Dr. Powell, you can be assured that his extensive hair transplantation experience, talent and skills will camouflage any potential scarring.
