What is platelet rich plasma?

PRP is a revolutionary procedure that has been used successfully in oral surgery, neurosurgery, sports medicine and orthopedics to promote wound healing, for the past two decades. More recently, PRP’s growth factors have been found to stimulate dormant hair follicles to grow hair.  PRP is also used for facial rejuvenation and other cosmetic procedures, including hair transplantation, because it enhances the body’s inherent capacity to repair and regenerate.

The main purpose of PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles to enter the active growth phase. PRP is being called an elixir for hair growth because it contains all the essential components for survival of hair, muscles, blood vessels. PRP therapy improves the environment for survival of hair follicles and the supporting structures, and helps to reverse follicle miniaturization – the hallmark of pattern hair loss.

How does PRP work?

Our blood contains platelets and specific growth factors that are designed to heal injuries. By extracting, concentrating and injecting platelet rich plasma into the scalp, we can facilitate and accelerate tissue regeneration and healing. Since hair follicles are made in the scalp skin, regenerating the scalp skin can recruit stem cells to create new blood vessels, and new hair follicles.

Research confirms the beneficial effects of PRP that are derived from not only platelets, but also the combination of 20 growth factors, and proteins that stimulate hair growth. PRP therapy promotes hair growth, and induces the growth of new blood vessels to supply the newly stimulated growth phase. In addition, hair count, density and diameter improve and inflammation is decreased.

How is PRP made?

A small amount of blood is taken from your arm. The blood is spun to separate the platelet rich plasma from the rest of the blood components.

The procedure

The site is cleaned and numbed with local anesthetic. Before injecting PRP, Dr. Powell may use Microneedling to stimulate the skin of the scalp and cause microtrama which provokes healing and activates growth and repair. Or, micro fat grafting may be used with PRP, because adipose cells contains stem cells.

Then the PRP is injected into the scalp in the areas to be treated. Proteins are released from the PRP solution almost immediately, and begin to stimulate hair follicles.

The procedure requires no down time and has minimal side effects. You may experience some swelling in the treated areas. It will resolve within the first 48 hours. Complete results may take up to 6 months.

Microneedling is safe and effective for use in many cosmetic procedures including treatment of scars and wrinkles. It provides enhanced transdermal delivery of topical substances, including PRP. The micro-channels created in the skin allow for better penetration of PRP.

PRP Applications

PRP can improve thinning hair and male pattern baldness. It is the non-surgical solution to hair loss and thinning hair, for men and women. It works for traction alopecia from hair extensions, and pony tails. Studies now show that PRP works in Alopecia Areata (AA), a common autoimmune condition, causing inflammation-induced hair loss.

Who is a good candidate?

PRP works on bald spots and receding hairlines caused by pattern hair loss. So long as you have hair growing, you would be a candidate.

Women who are experiencing or have experienced hair loss due to hormonal changes including thyroid disorders, medications, and aging, and genetic hair thinning are good candidates for PRP.

What About Repeat Treatments?

Once the patient is satisfied that the treatment works and the results are satisfactory, maintenance treatments every 2-3 years will assure their results are retained.

PRP therapy is simple, cost-effective, and has high patient satisfaction.

If you are frustrated with the loss of your crowning glory, microneedling treatments with PRP can be an effective solution. Microneedling combined with PRP has been shown to provide improved growth of hair. PRP plus microneedling works because microneedling allows the penetration of the plasma rich proteins and growth factors to penetrate the scalp delivering better results than the use of PRP alone. PRP contains natural growth factors which when injected into the scalp will stimulate natural hair growth. PRP and microneedling can also be combined with medications like Minoxidil for even better effects.
