Micronized Fat

What is Micronized Fat Grafting?

Micronized Fat Grafting, also called Micro Fat Grafting, is a new and emerging therapy for hair rejuvenation in male and female pattern hair loss. In essence, it is the use of your body’s regenerative cells to improve the function of hair follicles to promote hair cycling and regrowth. This technology uses the body’s own regenerative capabilities to make the treated area more conductive to healing which rejuvenate the hair follicles.

Female pattern hair loss is characterized by progressive thinning of the hair on the scalp.  Male pattern hair loss follows its own obvious pattern. While the patterns are different the effect is the same. The hallmark of pattern hair loss is the miniaturization of the hair follicles. The follicles shrink producing smaller and smaller hairs until the follicles fail. Recent studies report that fat cells containing stem cells support the stem cells in the hair follicle and drive hair growth

The goal of micro fat grafting is to regenerate the hair follicles by administering stem cells from stem cell rich fat, which reactivates dormant follicles to produce hair.

Micro fat grafting employs a new technique to purify and micronize the fat cells harvested during liposuction, to create a smoother, more uniform consistency that is mixed with PRP created from your own blood, and injected with small needles into the scalp.

What does Micro Fat grafting do?

It can rejuvenate hair follicles, hair thickness, and regrowth, and restore a receding hairline and bald spots. It is also used to restore facial volume loss and rejuvenate the face.

The Procedure

The Micro Fat Grafting procedure employs mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue to support the regeneration of the hair follicle by activating its stem cells to drive the hair’s complex regenerative hair growth cycle. In other words, the stem cells in fat when transplanted to the scalp will cause hair follicle regeneration and restore the hair cycles lost in pattern hair loss.

Hair follicles continuously cycle through stages of growth and activation, regression and rest. The skin that surrounds each hair follicle contains various types of cells that are required to maintain hair follicle growth. Scientific research has established that adipose cells are an integral part of the normal hair cycle. Adipocytes in the skin regulate hair follicle growth and skin health. Thus, the transfer of fat cells into the scalp stimulates hair growth.

This is quite a discovery only recently published in 2017! It is a breakthrough because initial treatment of pattern hair loss is typically the noninvasive use of Minoxidil and Finasteride. But research reports that only one third of patients respond to Minoxidil with hair regrowth. Low level laser treatment has been approved. But surgical hair transplantation is the gold standard treatment for genetic alopecia. Thus, hair follicle stimulation with enriched adipose cells can be used alone or as adjuvant therapy after a hair transplant.

The procedure

The procedure is performed in Dr. Powell’s office and uses only local anesthetic. Subcutaneous fat is aspirated from the patient using liposuction. Blood is drawn to create the PRP. The fat is treated for uniformity, mixed with PRP, and injected into the scalp. It is a simple procedure that can be done alone or combined with a hair transplant procedure.

Results are apparent during the next hair growth cycle and improve over time. This all natural regenerative procedure is a breakthrough in the treatment of hair loss. See Dr. Carl Powell at Powell Medical Hair Restoration in San Diego, California for state-of-the-art rejuvenation.
